Mapping Fear

Hello! This is a collaborative art project that tries to understand what Fear is and how it connects us to each other. This activity will take about 20 minutes. Please gather the following supplies before you begin:

  • 2 sheets of square white paper (please do not fold a diagonal line as the crease will distract from your drawing)
  • Colour pencils, markers or crayons

Observe Fear

What are you afraid of?

Take a deep breath. Look at the feeling of fear. Can you look at fear itself in the present, without thinking about the past or future? What does fear itself look like? Write down its colours and textures.

Create Drawing #1

Using the colours of your fear, cover the first square paper with markings and textures that record your observations of fear itself.

Keep your drawing abstract and focused on the marks, so that you do not get lost in memories of the past or worries about the future. Watch your fear in the present, and record what you see.

Create Drawing #2

Look at your first drawing. Can you observe this same fear but from a different perspective? (Perhaps from above or below, from far away or leaning in very close.) On the second square paper, draw what you see now.

Reflection

You have been an observer of fear during this exercise. Take a few moments to breath in and out slowly. When your mind is still, you may realise that the fear is not a separate, but a natural part of you. Fear arises as a result of our thoughts. When we are able to watch fear, without conclusions, without assumptions, we can better live with and learn from it.

Once you are ready, click "Next" to upload your drawings.

Upload Drawings

Please scan and upload your drawings as 2 separate images in the box below. Try to crop/rotate the photos to remove any borders.

If you do not have a scanner, you can also place your drawing on a flat surface and take a clear photo with your phone camera. If possible, please choose a location with bright natural light so minimise any shadows.
